Celebrating Staunton's Legacy

For more than three decades, the Howard Staunton Society has been honouring the life and legacy of Howard Staunton.

About Staunton

Howard Staunton was a prominent figure in several areas, most notably as the best and most active practical chess player of his time. He was also a leading chess author and columnist, and he played a key role in organising the first-ever international chess tournament, which took place in London in 1851. Additionally, Staunton was a scholar of Shakespeare, a significant educational archivist, a theorist, and a pioneer in the field of chess.

About the Society

Founded in 1993, the Howard Staunton Society honours Staunton’s legacy through cultural, historical, and educational initiatives. Its first act was funding a memorial at Kensal Green Cemetery.  The Society also organised the Howard Staunton Memorial Tournaments at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand (2003–2009), and it continues to promote chess as part of Britain’s intellectual heritage.

Membership Benefits

Membership of the Howard Staunton Society is open to anyone interested in chess history, literature, and Staunton’s legacy. Benefits include event invitations, newsletters, a Society badge, a welcome pack with a membership card and certificate. Members may vote at the AGM and help shape the Society’s direction. Membership structure is inspired by the pieces on the chessboard — from Squire to Rook.
