An Evening with Carl Portman MBE

Chess in Prisons And Why It Matters
The Howard Staunton Society is delighted to invite members and friends to an evening of talk and dinner with Carl Portman MBE, to be held at L'Escargot, 48 Greek Street, Soho, on Wednesday, 9th September 2026.
Carl Portman MBE is among the most tireless advocates for chess in Britain, and his subject this evening is one close to his heart. In "Chess in Prisons: And Why It Matters," he will explore how the game reaches into some of the most difficult corners of society and quietly transforms the lives of those who play it behind bars. His presentation promises to be at once enlightening and genuinely moving — a reminder that the sixty-four squares carry a power far beyond the tournament hall.It is a rare opportunity to hear from someone whose enthusiasm for the game's redemptive reach is matched only by his gift for conveying it.
